Update on the future of The Pales and “Friends” picnic 15th May.

Update on the future of The Pales February 2022 and “Friends” picnic 15th May.

In December the Pales Management Group were pleased to receive formal confirmation from Addoldai Cymru that they would like to acquire The Pales. Although the report on the cottage from their surveyor was still awaited, their Trustees felt confident that they could, in time, raise sufficient funds to renovate the cottage in order that it can be rented to a tenant, who may also take on a caretaker role.  They hope that the Friends of the Pales Quaker Meeting House becomes a properly constituted organisation open to Quakers, local residents and others who are interested in it, with the aim of ensuring that the Pales is a visited and lively place used by Quakers and by the community. They have been making links with neighbouring farmers and the Community Council. They are also considering building on ideas for a pilgrimage trail – ideally involving other properties in their care.

Southern Marches Area Quaker Meeting Trustees are to recommend to Area Meeting in March that it approves the transfer of ownership and oversight of The Pales to Addoldai Cymru as soon as the legal details can be sorted out. There will be provision for occasional Meetings for Worship, Quaker burials and marriages to continue.  Meetings for Worship are currently at 3pm on the third Sunday of each month.

Two very successful gardening days were held in November, resulting in a huge clear out of the pond

and surrounding area, cutting back of willows and a concerted attack on brambles and the creeping

plants that had started to worm their way under the roof of the toilet block. On 12th March there will be further gardening and a spring clean of the Meeting House and School Room.  All are welcome to help.  We have been extremely fortunate in that our neighbouring farmer, Dave Ingram, has agreed to carry out a weekly check of the buildings, and put us in touch with local tradespeople to mend fences and keep the grass under control in the spring.

On Sunday May 15th we hope to hold a picnic at The Pales for The Friends of The Pales to explore the way forward, and we hope many of you can join us.

Best wishes and thank you for your continued support.
