Jeff Beatty and the Beetles.

On Wednesday May 15th a select number of amateur entomologists(around 8) participated in Beetle Day and had a most enjoyable and instructive time – the day was well prepared by Jeff Beatty; samples of insect

life that had made their way into strategically placed paper coffee cups were examined, and nets were employed to sweep the shrubbery for more insects. The grounds of the Pales offer an interesting variety of habitats and some useful discoveries were made regarding the differences between open grassland and woodland. It was instructive to discover very little pond life (apart from a single newt), and this led to a discussion about how to improve conditions there by adding oxygenating plants, more stones, and possibly some shade. The pictures show just how much fun and education was available – there will be another opportunity to study this small world in the   Autumn when Jeff plans to repeat the exercise to see what changes occur through the seasons, and there is the prospect of repeating the exercise in a year’s time to build up evidence over  a longer period.

Fellowship Day at the Pales – 8th June.

Jeff Beatty writes – The day will have two or more parts to it and we will have lunch together.  Please bring your own, but possibly a cake or cakes to share for tea.

We will gather at 10.00 for a 10.30 start in the Meeting House.  The morning session will be on the important ‘intersection between sustainability and spirituality by using spirituality as the guiding hand in the quest for sustainability’. The afternoon will be on more practical aspects, which will work for those who can only join us at lunch time or afterwards.

We will have lunch at 1.00 (packed lunches) and start the afternoon session around 2.00.  Members of Extinction Rebellion will join us then and there will be games for younger Ffriends and a new one at the design stage.

Peter Hussey and I are very much looking forwards to the day and perhaps I will camp, too.

Taizé at the Pales with Susie Ennals – 16th June.

In March 19 people braved the wild windy weather on Saturday 17th March to come to the Pales for a day exploring the music and spiritual messages from the village of Taizé, in France. On the 16th June there is another opportunity to take part in this uplifting exercise in more clement weather. Once again Susie will lead a group through the songs and  chants from the Taizé tradition, most of them in 4 parts.

You can book a place on this uplifting event through the Pales website – please click here.

The PMG have taken further steps to improve the accessibility of the Pales. The website now lists, under Information, all the transport options available to make a visit possible and more eco-friendly. We are also listing local establishments that offer accommodation. We hope to supplement this information with guides to other local attractions.

We have also produced a new flier to help promote the Pales as a venue for a Day Out for families and groups. The leaflet will distributed to other local attractions and hotels etc. nearby. If you know of a venue that would be prepared to display the leaflet then it can be downloaded here – www.thepales.org.uk/downloads/palesposter.pdf – or you can ask a member of the PMG for printed copies.
