Become a friend of the Pales
The Pales is not just an old meeting house, of purely historical and sentimental interest. Anyone who has visited the site knows that it is a special place, a ‘thin place’ if you like, where heaven and earth meet, where those who gather together can consider, along with much else, the way we live today and the purpose of our journey on this planet. Set in the beautiful landscape of Radnorshire, it is away from the noise and the ‘busyness’ of everyday life, enabling the stillness to invite a sense of the sacred. A visitor recently wrote of her experience: “After just 48 hours here, I am personally aware of the value of time spent in such a peaceful, reflective setting. This is not a value we could or should put a price on, but it feels relevant to our current need for spiritual refreshment in fact-paced, often stressful lives.”
The Pales offered schooling and medical care to the local community for a short period in the 19th century, and continues to be a Meeting House and burial ground for Quakers, as well as providing a venue for creative workshops and other events. However, there is now only a small Quaker community in Radnorshire and there is a need to draw in a new following from England, Wales and around the world, and not just Quakers. It is our mission to make its restorative benefits available to increasing numbers of visitors by providing more facilities, including accommodation and a variety of activities, whilst remaining a place of worship and enrichment. While we plan and execute this vision for developing The Pales into a centre that transforms lives, there is a need to provide for annual costs, which at present are met by Quakers in the Welsh Borders. Subscriptions from ‘friends of the Pales’ will help to cover our modest running costs
We hope you will support us financially and welcome assistance in other ways, too.
